How You Can Create a New You
As he thinketh in his heart, so is he One's life is determined by the kind of thoughts he habitually thinks. That is what the wise man is saying in this proverb. I have before me a cosmetic advertisement which says to girls and women: "Deep within you is a Very Special Self that can create a New You. Don't stay fenced in behind the worrying thought that you are not the way you'd like to be. You are never unalterable. Within you is a wonderful power that can make lovely changes happen to you. It grows out of the close relation of your Inner Self and Outer Self and the power of each to change the other. This power quickens in you the happy self-forgetfulness you radiate when you know you look charming. But--when you haven't " lived up to your best, it depresses you with an empty discontent." That is good psychology. It is not vanity to develop the beauty of your face--albeit you can turn it into vanity. But it takes more than a beautiful face to make you really charming and attractive--it takes a beautiful soul. If you are to have a beautiful soul, you must think beautiful thoughts. If you habitually think ugly thoughts no cosmetics can make your face beautiful. If, as the wise man says, one's life is as he thinks, then it follows naturally that a happy and radiant life is predicated upon happy and radiant thinking. A word of caution is needed. Don't be misled into the notion that you can create a New You without a spiritual change. There must be that spiritual experience of which the apostle Paul writes: "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17). This spiritual experience, plus the practicing of the simple teachings of Christ, produces the thought changes which make for happy and beautiful living. With Christ living in you, the Inner Self will develop a power that will indeed create a New You.
