A Timeless Truth
In all ages religious faith has been man's salvation. You may hear some say that the world has outgrown religion. While granting that it served a useful purpose in the early stages of man's growth and development, they say that man has now grown beyond the stage where he requires a religious faith to sustain him and carry him through life.
But where are the men of whom this is true? On all sides there is unrest, giving evidence of a sense of insufficiency and helplessness. Men and women, overwhelmed with troubles, harassed by fears, frustrated by personal disappointments, bewildered at seeing so many disappointing things in the world, are wondering where they may turn for help and comfort and guidance.
Where shall they turn? Where can they turn, save to the religious faith which has been man's salvation through the ages? The faith and hope, the help and comfort that spring from religion, these alone, make life endurable and death bearable. The Psalmist says of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust." "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
This trust, this abiding under the shadow of the Almighty, has ever been man's salvation--and is still! And ever will be! It is the immutable essence of religion in all ages--this faith, this dwelling in the secret place of the most High: the dependence of the human soul upon its God! The cry sent up to heaven! The grasp of man's spirit upon the Infinite Spirit!
The onward sweep of time cannot change these truths. For here is the foundation of the universe, and of life.
Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou are God.
Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants,
And Thy glory upon their children.
And let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us.
Let us close with this passage from the Psalms, "Lord, thou has been our dwelling place in all generations."
